The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee has started free vaccination at Golden Temple plaza, Amritsar, on Saturday, May 29, 2021. On Friday, SGPC president Bibi Jagir Kaur in a press conference said, “The SGPC has arranged to administer 5,000 doses of Covaxin, and an amount of about Rs 53 lakh has been spent for this cause. These vaccines will be provided to the people free of cost”. “The free Covid-19 vaccination camp will be held near the Information Center plaza at Sachkhand Sri Harmandir Sahib. I appeal to the sangat to take benefit of this camp and visit the camp with their Aadhar cards”, she added.
Hailing SGPC for a scheduled free vaccination camp, the officiating jathedar of Akal Takht Giani Harpreet Singh said the government should provide vaccines to all the organisations willing to perform vaccination ‘sewa’.
The Jathedar objected to supplying coronavirus vaccine to deras by the government and not to the SGPC or NGOs willing to do vaccination sewa (voluntary service).
Talking to media persons on Friday, Harpreet Singh, in reply to a question over converting satsang bhawan of a famous dera into vaccination centre with the help of government, said, “It is wrong. If a dera can be converted into a vaccination centre, then why not gurdwaras? SGPC as well as DSGMC had been serving humanity ever since the beginning of Covid-19, we have converted diwan halls of gurdwaras into corona wards and not making them vaccination centres only shows the government's ill-intentions.”
