Andman Islands Titled After Paramvir Chakra Awardees Including Four Brave Sikhs

Recently PM Modi led Indian Government named 21 islands in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands after the name of recipients of Param Vir Chakra, which is the highest gallantry award in India. With the naming of Islands after the valiant awardees, Government of India affirms that this endeavor will be a source of inspiration for the generations to come in the country.

Param Vir Chakra is granted for "most conspicuous bravery in the presence of the enemy". Out of 21 Islands, four were named after following Brave Sikh Param Vir Chakra awardees.

1. Lance Naik Karam Singh was granted the Param Vir Chakra for his actions in Jammu and Kashmir State in India.

2. Subedar Joginder Singh, Param Vir Chakra was posthumously granted for his actions in Arunachal Pradesh.

3. Flying Officer Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon of the Indian Air Force was granted the Param Vir Chakra for his actions in the India-Pakistan War. Sekhon was killed in action in the war and was granted the Param Vir Chakra posthumously.

4. Naib Subedar Bana Singh of Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry was granted the Param Vir Chakra in the 1987 for his brave action under -50*C temperature in Siachen Glacier.
