In continuation with the hate crimes against Sikhs in foreign land, another tragic incident took place in Wolverhampton, Central England on October 30, 2022. Anakh Singh, 59, was found with serious injuries in Nine Elms Lane of the city while on duty as a driver for a private hire taxi company and died of his injuries. Singh was a private hire driver and was at work when he died following an assault. A post-mortem was carried out but the results were inconclusive.

Tomasz Margol, a 35 year old, has been charged with murder and appeared before Wolverhampton Magistrates Court earlier this month. Police appealed to all who have any information, who have not yet been in touch to contact them. An online fundraising campaign was launched for Singh’s family with a target of 2,000 pounds to help them following the tragic killing. “This is an awful time for his family; our thoughts are with his family. The donations will go directly to Anakh’s family to help support them at this difficult time. We have hit the original target, let’s keep going,” reads the fundraiser page.

Canada and the United States & UK— the countries combined form the largest chunk of Sikh Diaspora. Hate crimes against minorities are common. Killing of 4 members of family including a child & an attack on 75-year-old Sikh man in United States are fresh examples which sent shock waves all over the world. The reasons are not new. It’s a high time when cultural ignorance, prejudice and bigotry need to be addressed.
